Frequently Asked Questions

As a part of your animal’s Circle of Care, your veterinary professional has access to our Clinical Use Guide with over 40 treatment protocols for almost 300 canine and feline diagnoses and clinical applications. Please ask them for specific treatment recommendations before treating your animal.

In general, we recommend that you start with a loading dose of 2 to 4 15-minute treatments per day for acute and chronic or degenerative conditions.

For acute conditions (such as post-surgical treatment or recovery from a trauma), we recommend that you continue 2 to 4 treatments per day for the first week or so and then taper off for the next 7 to 10 days or until the condition is fully healed.

For chronic or degenerative conditions, we recommend that you continue with 2 to 4 treatments per day for 2 to 4 weeks and monitor the animal until you see improved mobility and less pain response. Again, you can taper down to 1 or 2 treatments per day or even 1-3 treatments per week. Ultimately, you want to consider that the Assisi Loop is catalyzing the anti-inflammatory cascade as well as accelerating the body’s own healing properties. We rely on veterinarians to assess the animal and to work with the pet owner on the best treatment protocols for each case.

For acute inflammation, you should see noticeable relief after the first or second treatment. With chronic or degenerative issues, you may not see notable results for 2 to 4 weeks. You’ll want to continue the treatments as recommended for continued long-term healing.

There are two ways to purchase the Assisi Loop: 1) get one from your veterinarian or animal rehabilitation facility, or 2) purchase one direct from our website

  • The Assisi Loop 2.0 Manual offers approximately 150 15-minute treatments
  • The Assisi Loop 2.0 Auto-Cycle offers approximately 100 15-minute treatments

The life of the Loop depends on the battery. You’re likely to get more than the number of treatments noted above if you allow the Loop to recharge for 2 hours after every 15-minute treatment. One Assisi Loop can last anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months, depending on the condition being treated and the number of treatments required per day.

Most pet owner insurance will cover prescribed treatments. We recommend that you contact your insurance company for more information.

Keeping your pet in your lap or in a contained area can be helpful in ensuring the full treatment is completed.

Please note that if you plan to use a metal crate for treatment, the metal can diminish the impact of the treatment. While it is not dangerous, it will reduce the dose received.  A crate that has a wide wire mesh will not reduce dosing significantly, but a solid metal piece could. Arranging the treatment in the crate so the Loop is on top of the pet, rather than against the crate and pet will reduce any interference.  You may want to add an additional session to compensate for any reduced efficacy. Similarly, using the Loop over a metal implant, in a bed with metal coils, or metal brace will not cause any harm, although it may reduce the dose the pet receives.

If possible, position the Loop so that it is at a 45° angle from the metallic implant or If in a metal crate, 4-5 inches from the metal, as possible.  You may choose to place a thick pad in the kennel or on the bed to allow for this distance.

Yes! The Assisi Loop® is an ideal adjunct therapy, meaning it can be used with other forms of treatment – even the very same day. However, given that the Loop and other treatment options have different mechanisms of action, we recommend that you allow 2 hours between treatments so your pet receives the full benefit of each modality.

If you believe your Loop has a factory defect, please call our offices at 866-830-7342.

Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend not using the Assisi Loop if you or your pet has a pacemaker or other electronic devices.

The Assisi Loop® can markedly increase blood flow and tissue oxygenation, which improves the overall tissue health and reduces pain associated with lack of sufficient oxygen. We often hear reports from pet owners that their animal relaxes as soon as they start their treatments with the Loop. With the many healing benefits that the Loop offers, this is not surprising.
Some animals will notice the increased blood flow because with increased circulation there is often a warming or tingling sensation. This is subtle, however, and many animals won’t notice at all. There have been some reports of twitching as a physical reaction to the tPEMF™ therapy. This is very rare and is most likely to occur with animals that have had some type of long-term degenerative or chronic condition. Their condition may have resulted in extreme ischemia–a decrease in the blood supply to a bodily organ, tissue, or part caused by constriction or obstruction of the blood vessels. If the area is ischemic, then the introduction of increased blood flow may cause a reaction in the body such as feeling of warmth, tingling and, in extreme cases, twitching.
As such, we generally recommend that you reduce the treatment duration to 5 minutes rather than 15. Continue at the reduced duration until the twitching is gone and the area has assimilated to the increased perfusion of blood.
One such case of twitching was the case of Lil BUB, a cat with osteopetrosis, an extremely rare inherited disorder where the bones harden. Her owner continued treatments despite the twitching, and over time, the twitching decreased and mobility increased. Learn more about her case and her significant improvements as a result of using the Assisi Loop on our blog here.

For acute inflammation, you should see noticeable relief after the first or second treatment. With chronic or degenerative issues, you may not see notable results for 2 to 4 weeks. You’ll want to continue the treatments as recommended for continued long-term healing.

The Assisi Loop Lounge incorporates the same technology used in the Assisi Loop® to deliver our patented tPEMF™ anti-inflammatory signal via a convenient therapy pad “Lounge” insert, designed to fit into your Sleepypod® Air or Atom carrier.

You should follow the instructions of your veterinary professional regarding how many times to treat your pet each day. Many veterinarians will suggest that you start with two-to-four 15-minute treatments per day for acute and chronic or degenerative conditions.

  • For acute conditions (such as post-surgical treatment or recovery from a trauma), we recommend that you follow the instructions of your veterinarian.  Many veterinarians will recommend that you continue 3 to 4 treatments per day for the first week or so and then taper off for the next 7 to 10 days or until the condition is fully healed.
  • For chronic or degenerative conditions, we recommend that you follow the instructions of your veterinarian.  Many veterinarians will recommend that you continue with 3 to 4 treatments per day for 7 to 10 days and monitor your pet until you see improved mobility and less pain response.  Upon improvement, many veterinarians suggest that you can taper down to 1 or 2 treatments per day or even 1 to 3 treatments per week. Veterinarians find that with some chronic and degenerative conditions, the patient may get to the point that they would only be treated as needed for pain, particularly if it is a condition that is prone to flare-ups.

Ultimately, you want to consider that the Assisi Loop Lounge is working to reduce your pet’s inflammation on a cellular level while accelerating the body’s own healing properties.  We rely on veterinarians to assess your pet and to work with you on the best treatment protocols for your pet’s condition.

Please call or email Assisi Customer Service immediately if you suspect your device is not working properly. Our replacement policy seeks to minimize the interruption or loss of your pet’s tPEMF™ therapy as a result of equipment malfunctions. To ensure that your pet benefits from this service, you should register your new Assisi Loop Lounge on-line at https://www.assisianimalhealth.com/registration.

If you have a pacemaker or other implanted electronic device, we recommend keeping a distance of at least six inches between your device and the Assisi Loop Lounge when treatment is operating.

Yes, as long as they fit comfortably and safely in the Sleepypod® carrier and tolerate being together in such close quarters.

If your pet received at least 10 minutes of treatment, you can wait until the next scheduled treatment cycle. However, if in doubt, there is no harm in initiating another partial or complete cycle.

This model of the Assisi Loop Lounge has been specifically designed for Sleepypod® pet carriers. The effective treatment field for this Loop Lounge model covers the entire area defined by the bottom of the inside of the Sleepypod carrier. Its effective depth of field is designed to deliver therapy within the entirety of the carrier’s interior. As long as your pet is within the carrier, they are receiving treatment.

If the pee pad contains any metal for stability or otherwise, the metal can reduce or distract the signal. Otherwise the treatment field can penetrate through the pee pad, delivering the full benefit of the therapy.

The operating components of the therapy pads once inserted inside the Sleepypod carrier are protected by the pad’s own moisture-proof foam material. However, the pads are not immersible. If pet fluids or other moisture should come in contact with the therapy pad, follow the cleaning instructions below.

Carefully wash the affected surfaces with a soft brush dampened with soap and water to remove solid particulates and odors. Then follow up with a thorough wipe-down of the affected surfaces with 70% Isopropyl alcohol (typical rubbing alcohol). Clean with the power off and wait 15 minutes after cleaning before operating the unit.
The Sleepypod plush liner is machine washable in accordance to Sleepypod’s care instructions.

The Assisi Loop Lounge® is powered by the internal battery in the tPEMF™ Controller Box, not by the electric current drawn from the wall outlet. The 12v current in the charge cord and within the Loop Lounge is harmless, should the wire insulation be damaged or pierced, by your pet or otherwise.

If there is an electrical short anywhere within the Loop Lounge system, the power from the Controller Box to the therapy pad will be shut down regardless of whether the controller box is plugged into an external power source.

If you’re experiencing an issue with any of the therapy components of the Assisi Loop Lounge system, please contact customer service at info@assisianimalhealth.com or 1-866-830-7342.

Most pet owners prefer to use the Assisi Loop 2.0. This device is easy to use at home and is appropriate for all of the conditions that you may be treating. The Assisi Loop 2.0 shuts itself off after each 15 minute treatment. The pet owner won’t need to set a timer and they won’t have to remember to turn the device off after the treatment is complete. The Assisi Loop 2.0 offers a minimum of 150 15-minute treatments.

The Assisi Loop Auto-Cycle is designed to treat acute conditions such as post-surgical healing and post-traumatic wound care. The Auto-Cycle is pre-programmed to treat these conditions continuously over a period of several days or more (up to 2-3 weeks). Both versions of the Assisi Loop have a treatment depth of 3-7 inches, depending on how you position it on the area in need of treatment. The field penetrates through casts and wound dressings. As such, if you have an animal with an acute condition, you can affix the Loop with vet wrap, integrate it with the wound dressing, or attach it to clothing/blankets that the animal may be wearing. The automatic program will treat for 15 minutes every two hours (which is the optimum treatment protocol for acute conditions such as post-surgical and post-traumatic wound healing). After the first 15-minute treatment, the Loop will go to “sleep” for 1 hour and 45 minutes until the next 15-minute treatment. It will cycle through this treatment protocol until it has been turned off manually or the battery dies. The Assisi Loop Auto-Cycle offers a minimum of 100 15-minute treatments.

To understand detailed treatment recommendations, visit our Assisi Loop® Clinical Use Guide, developed by a team of experienced veterinary clinicians.

The Guide is designed to answer questions you may have regarding the technology, the therapeutic benefits, and the therapeutic applications of the Assisi Loop and our companion products. It offers over 40 step-by-step, illustrated protocols for applying the Loop to almost 300 inflammatory conditions affecting different parts of dogs’ and cats’ anatomy. The Guide is available exclusively to veterinary professionals on Assisi’s website or may be downloaded as an app on Apple and Android devices (search for “Assisi Loop Clinical Use Guide” in your app store). Each has a search feature to assist in selecting the protocol that applies to their patient’s condition, its severity (e.g. acute, chronic), and the part of their patient’s anatomy that needs treatment. Once found, the applicable protocol can be downloaded in PDF form as needed.

The 20 cm (7.5 inch) Assisi Loop® delivers a clinically effective therapeutic signal to damaged tissue that is positioned within the perimeter of a barrel-shaped treatment zone, as illustrated. The effective treatment zone (ETZ) extends 25 cm (10 inches) above and below the plane of the applicator coil (i.e. 50 cm or 20 inches, from end-to-end). The diameter of the ETZ is 25 cm (10 inches) at its widest point around the applicator coil and 20 cm (7.5″) at its ends.

The ETZ for the 10 cm (4 inch) Loop extends 12.5 cm (5 inches) above and below the plane of the applicator coil. The diameter of the zone is also 12.5 cm (5 inches) at its wides point around the applicator coil.

Absolutely. There are no contraindications with other modalities, and the Loop is actually a perfect take-home treatment for pet owners to continue healing between laser or acupuncture treatments. However, given that the Loop and other treatment modalities have different mechanisms of action, we recommend that you allow 2 hours between treatments to be certain that each treatment is able to operate at its fullest efficacy.

The size of veterinary implants are not sufficient to significantly distract, weaken or otherwise adversely affect the therapeutic effect of the Loop’s signal. Additionally, many veterinary surgical implants are made of non-magnetic materials, so there are no magnetic induction effects from the Loop’s signal.

Out of an abundance of caution, we recommend not using the Assisi Loop if you or your pet has a pacemaker or other electronic devices.

Each veterinary professional will decide the best use of the Loop for their practice, but in our experience, most sell the Loop to clients. This is what sets the Loop apart from many of their other treatment options. Pet owners are able to treat their animals in the comfort of their own home between visits with their veterinary professional. Some veterinary professionals rent the Loop by the treatment or by the day. They may choose to send it home for acute conditions or to allow the pet owner time to evaluate the Loop for chronic conditions. Many pet owners who are treating chronic conditions decide they want the Loop for long-term use. As such, we recommend that you credit any rental fees toward the purchase price of the Loop.

Calmer Canine® delivers low level electromagnetic signals to the fear and anxiety center located in the dog’s brain. It works on a cellular level, to reduce the factors that contribute to creating and sustaining anxiety in the brain. The technology returns the overactive anxious brain to a more balanced and calmer state. Unlike other solutions that must be continuously delivered to help, Calmer Canine is able to control anxiety between treatments and may have sustained effects that last long after a course of therapy has been completed.

Yes. Calmer Canine® is very safe and much safer than medications, which can have unwanted side effects. This technology has been safely used to treat pain and inflammation in over 50,000 animals with virtually no reported side effects.

Calmer Canine should NOT be used in animals with implanted electromagnetic devices (e.g. pacemakers) and caution should be used by owners using the device if they have implanted devices, such as insulin pumps or pacemakers). Similar to the Assisi Loop products, Calmer Canine’s efficacy may be reduced by use of the device on or near a substantial amount of metal (such as in a metal crate or on a stainless steel table), or while using another electromagnetic device such as a laser.

No. The treatment has no sounds or vibrations and is invisible and sensation free. It is based on technology that has been cleared by the FDA for use in people.

The Calmer Canine® anxiety management system consists of the Calmer Canine device and a comfortable, easy to wear, washable vest. The vest helps to hold the device in the correct position to allow for hands-free operation. The device is powered by a replaceable battery.

Calmer Canine® should be used twice a day for 15 minutes each time. Treatments should be spaced 8 to 10 hours apart. Owners simply put the easy to use vest on their dog, attach the device to the neck strap with the Velcro attachment and turn the device on to activate it. The Calmer Canine device will turn itself off after the 15-minute treatment is over. The vest is then removed and set aside until the next treatment.

Results have been reported as soon as a few days after starting treatments. It is recommended that Calmer Canine® be used consecutively for four to six weeks, twice daily to achieve optimal results. Every dog is an individual and some dogs may benefit from treatment beyond six weeks.

You can expect that the dog’s symptoms associated with anxiety will be reduced over time. In a study of dogs with separation anxiety, results achieved by using Calmer Canine® included, less barking, less panting, less pacing and more independence while at home as well as more time spent resting or playing while the owners were away.

If the dog dislikes wearing any garment or dislikes the sound of Velcro, the therapy can be applied by holding the device in place with a hand in the position described in the User Manual. The Convenience Vest allows for hands-free delivery of the therapy, but it is not essential to achieve the benefits of treatment.

No.

Although designed specifically to help dogs with separation anxiety, Calmer Canine® may also help dogs with other anxieties and fears, such as thunder phobia, noise sensitivity, travel anxiety, general anxiety and situational anxiety.

Calmer Canine® offers a 100% money back guarantee, you may return the product within 30 days for a refund.

Yes. Calmer Canine® can be used on multiple dogs. It is a battery-operated device and the battery will typically last for 4–6 weeks of treatment according to the recommended schedule. The battery is replaceable. Calmer Canine vests are available for purchase without the device, in case a different sized vest is needed for use on another dog in the household.

A web-based progress tracking app will be developed encouraging pet owners to document treatments and easily capture their dog’s behavioral changes. Reports will be easily shareable with professional health and training providers allowing them to stay connected to monitor treatment.

Assisi Animal Health has not yet investigated the possible uses of the Calmer Canine® tPEMF™ technology on cats, or other species of animal. Cats do, however, clearly experience signs of anxiety. Our plan is to conduct research on this use of the technology as well as potential uses in other species in the near future.

The FDA has cleared PEMF therapy devices for use in people for a variety of conditions. Several companies offer PEMF therapy or similar electrical biomodulation technology to treat anxiety, depression and even ADHD in people.

The tPEMF™ signal in the Assisi Loop and in Calmer Canine® differ in some fundamental ways. Assisi has optimized the tPEMF signal in Calmer Canine and has tuned it to be effective in the treatment of anxiety in dogs. The Assisi Loop tPEMF signal is tuned to be effective in the treatment of pain and inflammation in animals. Assisi has created two different signals treating two different conditions in animals.

Due to the medical nature of our products, all items from our anti-inflammatory line, including the Assisi Loop, the Assisi Loop Lounges, and accessories, are final sale and cannot be exchanged or returned. This is for the health and safety of our customers and pet patients.

Vet FAQs

  • The Assisi Loop 2.0 Manual offers approximately 150 15-minute treatments
  • The Assisi Loop 2.0 Auto-Cycle offers approximately 100 15-minute treatments

The life of the Loop depends on the battery. You’re likely to get more than the minimum number of treatments noted above if you allow the Loop to recharge for 2 hours after every 15-minute treatment. At this time, there is no way to recharge or replace the battery. One Assisi Loop 2.0 can last anywhere from 3 weeks to 6 months, depending on the condition being treated and the number of treatments required per day.

You can take the Loop to any store that offers electronics recycling such as Staples or OfficeMax. This will allow for responsible disposal of the lithium batteries as well as the copper wire.

Keeping the pet in your lap or in a contained area can be helpful in ensuring the full treatment is completed.  Please note that if you plan to use a metal crate for treatment, the metal can diminish the impact of the treatment. While it is not dangerous, it will likely reduce the dose received.
